Modern day Monroe: doctrine.
The United States reserves the right to take action to protect itsself and its citizens from attack. That action may be pre-emptive: when a clear and present danger is perceived, the United States is not obligated to wait until the results are manifested.
It is the intention of the United States to take their case before the United Nations when threats arise from the governments or from organization within the county, regardless of whether those organizations are sanctioned by the government of that country or operate beyond the means of that country's control. The United States reserves the right to take action independent of the UN if it judges that those actions are insufficient to the need.
The United States furthur proposes a doctrine to be adopted by the United Nations on behalf of all the citizens of the world and fully consistent with the objectives that the blessings of economic and political liberty be extended to all citizens of the world. And that doctrine should be that the UN reserves the right to intervene on behalf of the citizens of a country with strong diplomatic and economic matters when possible and with police actions where necessary.

As far as I an tell from the news, the men and women of the miltary have conduted themselves well, they have NOT come to slaughter the enemy, and then have foregone "good" targets because of the cost to civilians, to non combatants. As far as I can tell from the news. I'm certain we could find, if we looked, a number of unsavory people in the ranks...but that was NOT how they were trained, that was not how they were directed, and any of that behavior was hidden from the press.
Well, what are the "asides"
1) We, as a nation, lied about our intentions. We lied about weapons on mass destrution. It seemed that calling it humanitarian (and there was surely room for humanitarian intervention) worked.
2) This is the same administration that lies about health care, eduation, energy, and consolidation and complete privitization of the media (the public* be damned) and energy regulation, not to mention, prides itself on being a disciplined party. So, this may be a humanitarian phase to what is the larger lie: Iraq is rich in oil. There is opportunity to build after a tear down. Any builder anywhere knows how that's done. (We had a national policy called "urban renwal" which tore down to get money to builders for new destrution.)
*Michael Powell, the son the Powell the secretary of state, claims to not know what the words "public interest" even means.
So, from so low a place, there is ample room to improve and rape at the same time. Gods son didn't walk the earth 2000 years ago and he's certainly no afoot today.
As to the pictures of war: that always depends on where the camera is pointed. I can go down to NY City today and take pictures of auto accidents, bums in the streets, murders and other acts of violence and get a like effect. Pictures are NOT objective: as they are a selected view, the are subjective, and indeed, nobody every got a Pulitzer Prize for a photo of somebody totally unhurt by a war, going about their buisiness.
I don't like George Bush. Only time will tell if he can fuck up the middle east more than it already was, not even to mention that a good deal of how bad it was fucked up was his direct doing.
