Francisco J. Ayala - Evolution - Scientists Who Believe in God - - New York Times

Bollocks.
Just what the hell does this "god" do? Does it make any sense at all to pray to "it"?
One can certainly define a god that fits perfectly in the cracks: that's what he did.
And he won't say whether he believes or not... finding these to be different "sides": nonsense. I could certainly "believe" in a god that created the universe and hasn't been heard of since. It's the personal god, the one that loves George Bush and propels him, that's the one that isn't there.

Demography Is King - New York Times

"It’s more accurate to say that the country has simply drifted apart into different subcultures"
Aided and abetted by an indifferent Bush administration...
leaving states to fend for themselves, compete one against the other, manage their international borders, and intentionally dividing the country by taking hard stands with the slimmest of majorities.
Brooks, ever the republican, cannot see cause anywhere.
Even the spottiness of the educational distributions and the incredible racial divide on dollars, education, civics...
There is a cause. And we elected it.

Dumb as We Wanna Be

Published: April 30, 2008

It is great to see that we finally have some national unity on energy policy. Unfortunately, the unifying idea is so ridiculous, so unworthy of the people aspiring to lead our nation, it takes your breath away."

Americans are stupid... Hillary is a whore... McCain is a cretin. That leaves us Obama.
Or Nader. Unless Edwards reconsiders... not a chance.
The truth is plain to see: no matter how we got here, we elected Bush, democratically, twice...

Consumer Confidence Slips as Home Prices Drop - New York Times

The only ray of happiness is that this is happening to the Bush loving republicans, too. Not that they are smart enough to realize it or place blame on this Jonah they have loosed on us.
Americans who will not get up on the hind legs can only deserve what they have democratically elected.
Aided and abetted by a Democratic Party that is hell bent on being even more stupid.

The Pastor Casts a Shadow - New York Times

"This whole story is about Senator Obama’s run for the White House and absolutely nothing else. Barack Obama went to Rev. Wright’s church as a young man and was blessed with the Christian bona fides that would be absolutely essential for a high-profile political career."
I can't help but feel a little bit happy about this Christian bonifides stuff... a little more separation of church and state and less pandering would have been in order...

As Clinton Seeks Gas Tax Break for Summer, Obama Says No - New York Times

Yep. Americans are that stupid.
We're talking $30 here.
Hillary wants a stupid America: looks like her election may depend on it. Oh my: she might win.

AT&T: Internet to hit full capacity by 2010 | Tech News on ZDNet

Speaking at a Westminster eForum on Web 2.0 this week in London, Jim Cicconi, vice president of legislative affairs for AT&T, warned that the current systems that constitute the Internet will not be able to cope with the increasing amounts of video and user-generated content being uploaded.

"The surge in online content is at the center of the most dramatic changes affecting the Internet today," he said. "In three years' time, 20 typical households will generate more traffic than the entire Internet today."
this is complete garbage! an audience has to be thoroughly ignorant or polite to the point of emasculation to accept this crap: he should have been hooted from the stage and thrust bodily from the building!
what is wrong with people???

Amid High Oil Prices, Danger Signs in Production - New York Times

Increase supply? nonsense!
They're making all the money they want, the price is going UP!
They'll only come down if their high price is threatened by alternative energy... then it will drop to kill them.
If the prices stay high enough, alternatives will be found... and the energy companies will try to kill them.

Real Time: Richard Dreyfuss Civics Lesson Part 1 - The Largest Minority

Learned Hand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"In 1944, Judge Hand delivered an address at a patriotic rally in New York City's Central Park. The address, entitled 'The Spirit of Liberty', is one of Hand's most famous utterances. In it, he famously described the spirit of liberty as 'the spirit which is not too sure that it is right.' He also made the pragmatic observation that 'Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can even do much to help it. While it lies there it needs no constitution, no law, no court to save it.'"

McCain Faults Bush Response to Gulf Storm - New York Times

The democrats, Hillary, Obama and the people whose job it is to get them the nomination (that's what they get paid for) forgot the reason they are running: to repudiate the policies of Bush.
Having abandoned that rich field, the Republicans have rightly picked it up... McCain picks up what the Democrats would not.
How utterly sad. Personally, my lack of respect for the Democratic Party borders on disgust..
The Democrats should be running against Bush: they are not, they have not, and they haven't even started! They are not even in the race.

you're not supposed to benefit

“We are benefiting from one thing, and that is the attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon, and the American struggle in Iraq,” Ma’ariv quoted the former prime minister as saying."

Hey, he's not the only one. Oil. Bush. Military service. Rich people.

Lots and lots and lots of Americans have benefited GREATLY from the twin towers attack... they aren't so much as disasters, and shifts in wealth.

Under this president, no burden has been shared. It's about winning. It's about your guys winning.

What's wrong with that? The answer is left as an exercise for the reader. Is there something wrong? Is there something right?

Cognitive Dissonance in Monkeys - The Monty Hall Problem - New York Times

not Nader's fault

here are the florida numbers.
note, too: as the campaign was being run, there WAS not a dime of difference. Bush, of course, lied through his teeth, but at the time, he pretty much matched Gore... remember compasionate conservatism?
Who knew?
ah, better yet: do we ever learn? (here comee McCain... watch the people get stupid again and do a Bush terms number 3 and 4)

Sen. Clinton's Remarks In Iraq Hearings - washingtonpost.com

The United States, if we were to call the war right now, has suffered a defeat. We cannot fault our soldiers who have done what they have been asked to do. More than 4 thousand have died! 30 thousand and more have been terribly wounded, terribly.
This president will not take responsibility, indeed, he will run out the clock on his adminstration: so long as the war is not ended on his beat, he may be satisfied that he has not lost.
His generals haven't lost.
It seems nobody has lost the war so long as you continue it and perhaps hope to just bring the it down over the years until we can quietly walk away, when some other larger war or disaster distracts us. Or the economic disaster. Or the environmental disaster. Or some natural disaster.
The was is a disaster, and it is a disaster of our making and our choosing. Time to end it.
Hard as it may be for the president and the generals to see, some parts of world will do quite well without us. And meantime, places that might be helped, like Darfur, do terribly and we might be able to help there.

Condi Rice, vice president....

Here's a tough ticket :-)
"Oh, please; oh, please; oh, please. I know it's undignified to beg, but please let John McCain pick Condoleezza Rice as his running mate."

A scam...

"The subsidized conversion of crops into fuel was supposed to promote energy independence and help limit global warming. But this promise was, as Time magazine bluntly put it, a “scam.”"
Wow.
But, hey, that was good for one article. On to the next thing. And the scam goes on.
It seems that a scam is something that should be fixed? I guess not.

The Already Big Thing on the Internet: Spying on Users - New York Times

cookie coming home to roost...
"Tech companies can keep track of when a particular Internet user looks up Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, visits adult Web sites, buys cancer drugs online or participates in anti-government discussion groups.

Serving up ads based on behavioral targeting can itself be an invasion of privacy, especially when the information used is personal. (“Hmm ... I wonder why I always get those drug-rehab ads when I surf the Internet on Jane’s laptop?”)"

In Massachusetts, Universal Coverage Strains Care - New York Times

there really isn't any medical care available... a small increase puts a strain on the system.
well, that's fine... it can be fixed, now that we know there is a problem.
